Find out About our Programs and Services

The Powder Mills Park Fish Hatchery, stewarded by The Riedman Foundation, supports regional fisheries, environmental education, and community engagement. Using responsible propagation practices, the Hatchery raises fish that contribute to sustainable fisheries and healthy aquatic ecosystems in partnership with public agencies. As an accessible educational resource, the Hatchery offers schools, families, and community groups hands-on learning about fish biology, conservation, and water stewardship.

Public access and youth-focused programming foster outdoor recreation and environmental awareness, while longstanding community traditions—like the annual fishing derby—strengthen connections to Powder Mills Park. Thanks to ongoing philanthropic support, The Riedman Foundation preserves and maintains the Hatchery as a valued public resource, ensuring its sustainability and benefit for future generations.

Fish Propagation and Conservation

The Hatchery raises and maintains brown and rainbow trout species that support regional fisheries and aquatic ecosystem health. Through responsible propagation practices, the Hatchery contributes to sustainable stocking efforts and long-term conservation goals in partnership with public agencies.

Environmental Education and Outreach

The Hatchery serves as an educational resource for students, families, and community groups. Programs introduce visitors to aquatic life cycles, fish biology, water quality, and conservation principles, fostering environmental awareness and stewardship among all ages.

Public Access and Recreation Support

Open year-round, 7 days a week during Monroe County Park public hours, the Hatchery enhances recreational opportunities within Powder Mills Park by offering a space for visitors to learn about fish and fisheries in a hands-on, accessible setting. Seasonal events and self-guided visits encourage outdoor exploration and connection to nature. Be sure to bring your quarters to feed the fish through our food dispensaries.

Youth and Family Programming

The Hatchery supports youth-focused experiences that introduce children and families to fishing, environmental science, and outdoor recreation. These programs help build lifelong appreciation for natural resources and conservation. Contact our Manager, Ron Mitchell at (585) 671-9791 or rmitchell@riedman.com for more information.

Community Events and Traditions

Through longstanding community events—such as the annual fishing derby held on the first Saturday of April—the Hatchery strengthens community ties and honors traditions that have connected families to Powder Mills Park for generations.

Stewardship and Facility Preservation

With the sole support from The Riedman Foundation, the Hatchery is maintained as a safe, educational, and welcoming public resource. Ongoing investment ensures the preservation of facilities, grounds, and infrastructure for continued community benefit.
